The Lato font family was designed by Łukasz Dziedzic, a Warsaw-based type designer with a number of retail and custom font families to his credit (FF Clan, FF Good, FF Good Headline, FF Mach, FF More, FF Pitu, empik, getin).

His friend Adam Twardoch, a font developer and typographic activist, did some technical work on the final font files, some project administration, some writing, and generally tried to keep Łukasz happy.

The good folks at the Google Web Fonts lent their support to the project so that the Lato fonts could be released under the SIL Open Font License (which means: they’re free!). Dave Crossland piloted the project and has helped us with his good spirit.

All type design and most of the font technical work was done in FontLab Studio 5, Łukasz’s favorite instrument of self-torture. Some TrueType autohinting was done using FreeType ttfautohint by Werner Lemberg.

  2. Thanks again for this wonderful font. I use it for all my letters, correspondence, and my CV where i feel the balance is just perfect. I’ve also replaced all my system fonts on iOS with Lato. It’s taking over my life…

    Warm Regards

  3. Hello! First of all, congratulations on a beautiful Font! We are actually interested in using it in our new corporate webpage, and stumbled on a browser problem: the Litos Ultra-Bold 900 looks fine in every browser we tested (Safari, Chrome, Firefox) with exception of Explorer 9. Is there a solution to this? Thank you in advance!!

  5. Hey, Łukasz
I’m currently a 3rd year Multimedia design student, and I was given a brief to create a CMS website dedicated to a typeface, the website has to reflect the meaning of the typeface.

I came across your typeface, and decided to use it for my project- I was hoping that I could maybe get a little more information from you about the Lato font, such as: inspiration for the design, design process, and rationale.
    Thanks, Carla 🙂

  6. Congratulation to this wunderful font! I ♥ Lato!!! It’s great!

Thanks a lot for sharing this font!

  7. I really love your fonts! I use them in all of my projects – they always fit in.

The only problem is that I need SVG webfont support (mostly for mobile devices). I’ve been using Font Squirrel (http://www.fontsquirrel.com/tools/webfont-generator), but it would be nice to have something official and also remove the pain of having to convert them all myself after each update.

    • BTW, be warned that Font Squirrel will most likely change the font-family, font-weight, and font-style, so be sure it change them yourself afterwards (if you use Font Squirrel).

  8. Hi! Thank you so much for your work, I really like Lato fonts! Did you know in Finnish it means “barn” or “hovel”? 🙂

I was thinking of donating you something for this awesome work, but it’s a bit intimidating that the donate button takes me to a paypal page with texts in your language I guess, and I don’t understand anything… When handling money it would be nice to understand the texts in English.

    Best Regards!
    Vilja

    • There is exactly same text as on English, Finish, Bulgarian and French pay-pal pages. Just translated. So if you have seen Finish pay-pal page — it’s same.

  9. Pytanie, kiedy pojawi się na Google font czcionka Lato 2.0 (lub nawet 1.0) wersja extended Latin?

    Dziękuje za font 🙂

  10. Why there is no polish characters (or any other non-latin) in google fonts?

    • You need to use the latin-ext subset in Google Fonts selection panel.

  13. Hi Łukasz, first-off thank you for the work you are investing in this project.

If I may ask, could you consider releasing the source files of the fonts, and eventually Postscript binaries? (well if the source gets released, I can generate them myself anyways)

As a type designer, I like to have a look at the source files (I would like to look at the outlines of Aleo and Lato and how they relate), and it’s rather unfortunate to see type families released under the SIL OFL that don’t publish the source, esp. a high-quality and very complete family like Lato.

    Cheers,

    • It’s pretty hard to define what is a source of Lato. Vfb? Otf? All scripts written for production?

  14. It’s a pity that we cannot use such a beautiful font only because Romanian isn’t supported. We hope it will be in near future!

    • Also, by “all scripts written for production” do you mean the scripts that do things like overlap removal and generate the binaries automatically?
